SURFACE “HARDSCAPE” COMBINATIONS
Although typically people are unfamiliar with the specific term “hardscape” they are usually very familiar with the products. Hardscape items are generally referred to as your base or surface products, such as flooring. I tend to use the term more liberally, as in all of the first items we select when beginning a new build or remodel project; flooring, countertops, etc.
Do you want to remodel or have you just built a new home? The process of selecting hardscape items can be grueling. While your general contractor is pushing budget and time, you are endlessly searching for the perfect flooring, cabinets and hardware to make your dream home a designer inspired reality.
Below I have compiled a few selections, broken down by style, that I know harmonize well with each other. Fusing form, function and beauty is always the goal in any project!
TRANSITIONAL: This style is typically noted as a style that has no clearly defined style; it is slightly traditional but with simple, clean lines. Generally we see transitional styles also associated with a neutral color palette.
TRADITIONAL: This style is exactly as it sounds, however many people confuse traditional with antiques or the style they grew up with in their parents home. Traditional does to have a bit more flair however than transitional, consider scrolls, florals, and a bit stronger pattern than you might see in a transitional setting.
MODERN TRADITIONAL: I prefer to use the term “modern traditional” more often than “traditional” as it less reminiscent of old, ornate and unstylish. Anymore traditional tends to be less Ethan Allen and more Pottery Barn. Clean lines, organized and clutter-free with simple touches rather than elegant or elaborate.
CONTEMPORARY: Not to be confused with modern, which tends to be a bit more outlandish than contemporary. Contemporary style is typically clean, open and minimalist by nature. Light colors contrasted by bold accent, little to no accessories, strong art, hints of metal, lots of glass and strong lines in the furnishings. This style is generally much more inviting and comfortable than its counterpart, “modern”.
MODERN: The modern style can be either bold or subtle. Regardless this style is extremely cutting-edge. It can be sculptural and architectural in its furnishings. Yet always it is a minimalist style.
TUSCAN/OLD WORLD: This old world style is virtually Mediterranean with Old Italian flair. Often hints of rustic, old Mexican and antiques are blended into this unique style of decorating.
